Organic Pennsylvania Pepper
For years, salt and pepper shakers have been stables on everybody's kitchen or dining room table, but some people find themselves looking for salt free options. Peugeot of France, better known today as an automaker, has been credited with inventing the first pepper grinder back in 1842. The pepper grinder allowed for an easier way to crack the peppercorns than with the mortar and pestle method primarily used up until that time. This Organic Pennsylvania Pepper is destined to become a favorite in households who've decided to go the salt free and organic route - no pepper grinder needed.Black pepper, Piper Nigrum, is the most traded spice in the world. It is ubiquitous in the modern world as a seasoning, and pepper derives its spicy heat from the chemical compound piperine, containing between 4.6% and 9.7% piperine by volume (white pepper contains a bit more than that). By weight, refined piperine is about one percent as hot as the capsaicin compound found in chile peppers (this is the chemical that makes chile peppers hot).
The Story Behind Our Organic Pennsylvania Pepper
This is our second organic spice blend, just as our original Pennsylvania Pepper was the second blend that we created from scratch shortly after we launched our business back in 2008. There's something almost magical, yet incredibly simple, about a top-quality gourmet pepper blend, and we've had some of our wholesale restaurant customers, as well as home cooks rave about this blend. We've even heard from several who've made the switch to Pennsylvania Pepper over using either regular ground pepper or freshly ground pepper from their peppermill. Some people crave salt and will add it to just about everything they eat. Me, I've never been a big fan of salt. Probably due to working my early years in restaurants where salt was prevalent everywhere. Because of this, my taste buds can pick up even the tiniest amount of salt in just about anything.
Before we even launched Spices, Inc. we were placing orders with other spice companies so that we could see things like -- how long it took them to process and ship orders, how long it took for the order to arrive, how the order was packed, etc. Of course, we also wanted to check out the quality of their spices and seasoning blends. I was surprised that several of the pepper blends also contained significant amounts of salt and sugar, which because of their relatively low cost, tend to be great fillers. Right then and there I was determined to create our first pepper blend with no added salt or sugar.
Because our conventional Pennsylvania Pepper is one of our signature blends, we're pretty darn sure that our organic customers will love this version just as much.
Flavor Profile
In addition to the peppery flavor that you'd expect, you'll also pick up hints of garlic and even some natural, gentle sweet notes provided by the organic red bell peppers. This is our most popular salt free seasoning blend and it's stuffed full of zesty flavor without being hot!
