Dried Chiles & Peppers
The taste of dried chiles runs the gamut in flavor --- from slightly fruity to smoky, in heat --- from mild to crazy hot and in size --- from as tiny as a small pea up to 12” in length.
Indigenous to South and Central America as well as the Caribbean Islands, chiles today are grown in hundreds of varieties and are cultivated in a range of tropical regions throughout the world. More than a quarter of the world’s population consumes dried peppers on a daily basis due to their relatively inexpensive price (compared to many spices) and also as a great way to add some spicy flavor to otherwise bland ingredients.
Dried chiles are also ideal for those who are looking for healthy alternatives as these are not only an excellent replacement for salt in your diet but they also are an excellent source of vitamins A and C.
We carry a well rounded selection of dried chile peppers from the mild paprika peppers to the incredibly flavorful Mexican chiles such as Ancho chiles which come in on the heat scale at 3-4 (the heat scale is typically considered to be from 1 to 10 with ten being considered the hottest pepper) to the delectable Chipotle chiles (at 6-7 on the heat scale) and right on up to the fiery hot Habanero which comes in at a 10 on the heat scale!
We provide additional info on the scoville heat units for each chile and convert that to an easier to understand ranking of 1-10 on the heat scale (10 being hotter). You will find that we give a range for dried pepper heat (i.e. 1-2 or 5-6,) this shows the heat variance and any particular chile may be a bit hotter or milder depending on where they are harvested. Even chiles from the same fields can have subtle heat differences.
You will also find that we have an ever increasing selection of Certified Organic Chiles as well.
