Hawaij is a spice blend that is a staple to the Yemen cuisine and also enjoys great popularity in Israel’s large Yemenite community. Some have described this to be similar to a Garam Masala but this curry like blend is the base ingredient in soups, stews, rice, vegetables and is also used a rub. Used as a fresh bread dip (like Dukka) by the Beduoin of the Sinai. Common spellings include Hawayej and Hawayij.
Hand blended from black pepper, caraway, cardamom, turmeric and saffron. Other popular seasoning blends of this region include Ras El Hanout and Zaatar. |
