This is our Certified Organic Whole Leaf Thyme and it has a earthy, peppery aroma while the taste is spicy with a hint of mint and cloves. Popular in several European dishes thyme is used liberally by the French in soups, stews, sauces, vinegars, and the blends Bouquet Garnisand Herbes de Provence. A featured ingredient in Jordan’s widely popular condiment called Zaatar, while in Creole cuisine it adds flavor to blackened fish and meat dishes and in Central American cooking it is used in the making of Jerk Seasoning. Indigenous to the Mediterranean basin region this scented perennial prefers full sun and well-drained soil but due to its ever increasing popularity it is now also being successfully cultivated in a variety of temperate climates around the world, including locations throughout Europe and South America. Also known as common thyme, garden thyme, thyme herb or dried thyme, it is one of over 350 species in the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Thyme is a fairly powerful seasoning, so start off with just a dash or two so as to not overwhelm your dish and if needed add more to achieve the desired taste. Thyme is an excellent addition to egg and cheese dishes such as quiche, frittatas, and omelets, as well as cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, leeks and legumes. Works well in combination with allspice, basil, chili powder, garlic, nutmeg, oregano and paprika. Some recipe ideas using Thyme include: Greek Chicken Casserole, Basil Frittata, Jerk Chicken Marinade and Classic Seafood Gumbo.
