The sharp pungent aroma of caraway seed is similar to dill and its warm, biting, flavor is a bit sweet and almost a cross blend of anise and dill. Indigenous to Asia and central and northern Europe it is now also grown in Canada, Morocco and in the U.S. This is our Organic Caraway Seed and it is harvested in Canada.
Caraway Seed is found in kitchens around the world. In Italy, street vendors sell hot chestnuts that have been boiled in caraway seeds, while in Germany they have a well known kummel liqueur that includes anise, caraway and cumin. Some of the traditional cuisines of Austria, England, and the Netherlands have long included it in several of their favorite dishes. Caraway Seed is also popular in rye and other breads, apple dishes (like apple pie and applesauce), biscuits, cheese, cookies, goulash, herb butters, noodle dishes, crackers, pickles, spiced seed cake and sauerkraut. Helpful hint – while the seed grinds quite easily they will quickly lose their flavor so we recommend that you grind in smaller batches to ensure a potent taste. Works well in combination with parsley, coriander and garlic. Some of the popular recipes with caraway seed include Apricot Turkey Roll, Moroccan Caraway Soup, Irish Soda Bread, Hungarian Goulash, Caraway Seasoned Cheese Bread and German Bratwurst and Sauerkraut. |
