While there are a variety of chili peppers available the cayenne is the most popular of our ground red peppers. This thin pepper is about four to 12 inches long and very pungent. Technically, chili peppers are a fruit and are not considered a spice until they are dried. This is our Organic Cayenne Powder which registers 30,000 HU (or about a 3 on the heat scale of 10).
We also carry a Cayenne Pepper Medium Heat that is a bit hotter at 3.5 or 35,000 HU and also a burn your face off CayennePepper Hot Heat that comes in at 9 on a scale of 10 (or 90,000 HU). If you are a fan of hot peppers then you might want to also try out some of our other peppers like Dried Ancho Chilies (2 heat on a scale of 10), Dried Chipotle Chilies (7.5 heat on a scale of ten), Chipotle Powder (7.5 heat on a scale of 10), Dried Habanero Chilies (20 heat on a scale of 10)and Habanero Flakes(20 heat on a scale of 10).
Our Cayenne is also an excellent choice for those on a low-sodium or salt-free diets. Cayenne’s bright reddish orange color and perky flavor can be found in many Southwestern salsas, Indian chutneys, Thai curries, Mexican enchiladas, Chinese stir-fries, Texan chili con carnes, Cajun hot sauce, and many other recipes.
Helpful hints: If haven’t cooked with chili peppers before (ground or whole) then we recommend that you start with smaller amounts you can always add more. You should also know that dishes that contain chili pepper often get hotter as they sit or are stored. So again err on the side of less is more.
