Do You Support Your Local Farms and Farmers Markets?
With rising fuel costs and therefore the rising cost of groceries… and then add in the weird food outbreaks of the recent past – spinach from California and then tomatoes…no wait…jalapenos… no maybe it was the lettuce from the spring of ’08. Well if you aren’t already then maybe you should start looking into finding more food that is grown closer to home. Not only does it taste better because it is fresher but it is more nutritious as well. It also certainly helps your local economy by keeping more dollars in your immediate area and that in turn helps keep the local farms in business. It keeps your grocery bill down (and helps the environment at the same time) as the typical vegetable and/or piece of fruit has to travel more than 1,500 miles to get to your local grocery store. And well you don’t hear about food outbreaks happening at the local level – there are incredibly rare. We have found a terrific resource to help you locate farms and farmers markets in your local area and all you have to do is enter your zip code. Check out the great folks at LocalHarvest.Org. |
