How to Avoid High Sodium When You Eat Out
If you aren’t already fully immersed in the daily challenges that come about when you become keenly aware of the high amount of sodium in fast food and pre-packaged foods then some of this will be very eye opening to you. Here is a sodium loaded question – Did you know that a regular Big Mac has just over 1 Gram of sodium? And this doesn’t count those drenched in salt fries! Heck that Big Mac alone is between ½ and 1/3 of your acceptable daily amount. What the heck are you suppose to do when you go out to lunch with co-workers? You can’t very well bring your carefully prepared meal in your Tupperware dish. Well we have come across a great resource that takes some of the worry out of eating out – check out Low Salt Foods.com and they will give you the best alternatives for low sodium choices for restaurants ranging from the most common (and also many regional options) fast food restaurants as well as some great casual restaurant options. Many of these choices are as low as 250mg – so you can go out and enjoy the company of friends and co-workers without the stress and worry of blowing your daily allotment of sodium in one sitting. We also came across a recent article that talked about how much the average daily consumption of sodium has sky rocketed since the 70’s. Back in that decade the average daily consumption was about 2,300 MG and today it is 3,300. Most of that comes from restaurants (as we have already mentioned) and processed food. And for some more great info on this we turn to Men’s Health Magazine that listed the saltiest foods by category here are some of the most shocking:
