8 Excellent Ways to Make Any Salad Taste Better
I’m a salad lover. There’s just something about being about to go out back and pick some lettuce, carrots, turnips and tomatoes that makes me feel self sustainable and closer to nature, even if it’s for just one meal. Just because salads are delicious and healthy doesn’t mean that they don’t get a little boring sometimes. In fact, sometimes your healthier choices can be the blandest. You just have to learn how to shake up your salad routine! Salads are great because, like salsa, you can incorporate almost any ingredient that you feel like eating that day. Salads can incorporate fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts or anything creative you can think of.
Here are 8 ways that we’ve found to switch up your salad making habits because everyone should get a chance to turn boring into “Can I eat salad for every meal, please”?
Dress It Up – One way to stay fresh and add flavor to your salad is by keeping the store bought dressing in the fridge and grabbing a fresh lemon, lime or orange or some olive oil, or heck use a combination. A spritz of fruit juice will brighten duller flavors in your salad, especially darker greens. Olive oil will bring out fuller flavors in your otherwise lusterless salad.
Get Even Fresher – Just because you have your typical fresh salad ingredients doesn’t mean you have to stop there. Adding fresh herbs like basil, dill, tarragon and mint give you just the right amount of flavor when thinly diced and sprinkled in salad.
Get Ricey – Whether its rice, Quinoa, or beans, adding something to add texture will make your taste buds happy. These are all normally pretty inexpensive but help fill you up when just lettuce won’t do.
Be Cheesy – If I could add cheese to every meal I would. Sprinkle some cheese on top of your salad for a delicious way to get your calcium. Depending on the type of salad you’re making, some of our favorites include mozzarella, cheddar and feta.
Go Nuts – Whether you just have a jar in the cupboard or bought special finely chopped salad nuts, don’t be afraid to add a generous amount to your salad. Just watch out for the ones that are coated in sugar and other sweeteners that may take away from the super health benefits that your salad has.
Add Some Protein! – Fish, chicken and even steak (I had never heard of a steak salad until I moved to PA) create a completely different aspect to your salad and can turn a side salad into a full blown meal. This is also an easy way to incorporate some leftovers from your weekend barbecue.
Add an Avocado – Avocados are everywhere, and when I say everywhere I mean it. This is one of those food fads that is likely to become a seasonal trend. They add a creamy texture to an otherwise crunchy salad and are just downright tasty.
Whip Up an Egg – Eggs definitely aren’t just for breakfast! Whether it’s hard boiled, fried, poached or even sunny side up (if you’re feeling really adventurous) the egg is an awesome addition to any salad and will give you that morning energy no matter what time of day it is.
