The paprika (Capsicum annuum) is similar to a sweet red bell pepper and is significantly milder and a bit larger than most chile peppers. These are also called sweet red peppers or pimento peppers. Adored for both its vibrant color and gently pungent, sweet/peppery flavor, paprika is found in many Cajun and Creole soups, stews, and homemade sausage.
Hungarian Paprika is typically used for those that prefer a hotter taste, while Spanish Paprika by those that are in search of a milder, smoky flavor. Native to South America, this originally tropical plant is now cultivated in Spain, Israel, Hungary, Turkey, Yugoslavia, and the United States. Our Organic Paprika's flavor is very close to that of our Spanish Paprika and is harvested in Israel but we also offer a Domestic Paprika from the U.S.
Paprika is a must have spice for anybody looking to have a well stocked spice selection in their kitchen. It is ideal when you are looking to add a bit of color and a bit of pungent sweetness to any dish. Use it on cheeses, chicken, egg dishes, duck, hors d'ouvres, pork, rice, salads, vegetables and smoked foods. We also like to use it in salad dressings, where it not only adds some color but it also works as an emulsifier (to combine the oil and vinegar).
A word of caution – while paprika releases its flavor and color when heated it will also burns easily and once it becomes brown in color it starts to turn bitter. So be sure not to allow it to cook for too long (in a frying pan, for example). You can substitute organic paprika for any dish that calls for Hungarian or Spanish Paprika.
And if you are looking for some recipe ideas with paprika give these a whirl – Chicken Paprika, Cajun Chicken Wings, Cincinnati Chili, Baked Salmon Fillet with Mustard Breading and Cinnamon Citrus Marinade.
Works well when combined with allspice, caraway, cardamom, garlic, ginger, oregano, parsley, pepper, rosemary, saffron and turmeric.
We also offer Organic Chipotle Powder and Organic Red Pepper Flakes.
