please email Greg at
gpatterson@spicesinc.com and Jalapeno Flakes in the subject line.

Native to Mexico the Jalapeno is a member of the species Capsicum annuum and is widely considered to be the most recognized chile in the US. Pronounced “ha lay pain yo”, in Mexico the jalapeno is also known as “chile gordo” and “huachinango” and is named after the town of Xalapa (sometimes spelled as Jalapa) in the Mexican state of Veracruz. While ingenious to Mexico these chiles are also grown in the southwestern US and throughout South America. Our Jalapenos are grown in Chile.

At about 1-1/2” wide and 2 to 3 inches long Jalapenos are harvested while still immature and are their familiar green color. When left on the vine to fully ripen they turn a bright red.

When dried and smoked the jalapeno is called Chipotle. We carry both types of chipotles the harder to find
Chipotle “Mecos” and the more common Chipotle “Moritas”. While dried, smoked jalapenos are quite popular the unsmoked, dried jalapenos are actually much more difficult to find.

With their familiar earthy-grassy flavor Jalapenos are considered a medium heat chile coming in at between 2,500 and 8,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units).

These handy Jalapeno Flakes can be used in chili, corn bread, salsa, sauces, spice blends, stews, taco meat or sprinkled over chicken, eggs, pork chops and of course pizza! We even use them as a secret ingredient in a dynamite Salsa Verde.
One of our favorite recipes using Jalapeno Flakes is Rhubarb Salsa.

If you’re a fan of jalapenos then be sure to check out our
Jalapeno Powder and Jalapeno Seasoning Salt. If you're a chilehead and love chile flakes then take a look at our growing selection that includes Ancho Flakes, Chipotle “Morita” Flakes, Habanero Flakes and for a bit of the exotic Korean Chili Flakes.

Jalapeno Flakes are perfect for all those dishes that need something different from red chile flakes. Because the dried flakes retain the actual pepper flavor as well as heat it can be substituted any place you'd like a fresh jalapeno. Finally, I do not have to stop making a dish because of the lack of fresh jalapenos. There will always be some in my cupboard. Right-on SpicesInc!
