Often times misspelled as tumeric it is also known as yellow root, Indian saffron or turmeric curcumin. This dried and then ground rhizome of the Curcuma longa root features a bright yellow color and while native to Southeastern Asia, it is now harvested extensively in India and Indonesia. Our Organic Turmeric is cultivated soley in India. A member of the ginger ( Zingiberacea) family, Turmeric has an acrid, warm aroma, bright color, and slightly pungent, bitter taste that is heavily depended upon in cooking throughout Asia. Turmeric tastes a bit like a cross between ginger and pepper. It is probably best recognized as the spice that gives curry powder and mustard its unmistakable golden orange color. We also carry a non-organic Turmeric Powder. Its culinary uses are many – in India it is often used to color sweet dishes, while in Morocco Turmeric is used to spice meat (especially lamb) and vegetables. Turmeric is also used with fish, in baked goods, prepared mustards and pickles, broths, dressings, egg recipes, and soups. We like to use it with artichokes and potatoes and in rice dishes. Works well in combination with cilantro, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, fennel seed, garlic, ginger, mustard seed, paprika and pepper. Some of the more popular recipes with Turmeric are - Moroccan Caraway Soup, Poudre de Colombo, African Vegetable Stew and Spicy German Mustard.
