Our Organic Sichuan Peppercorns are grown in China. The gourmet Sichuan peppercorn is also called Szechuan peppercorn(s), Szechuan pepper, Szechwan peppercorn(s), Szechwan pepper and Schezuan peppercorn(s).
These are not peppercorns at all but instead these distinctive reddish-brown “peppercorns” are the outer pod of the fruit of an aromatic shrub or small tree native to the Central Province of China. Today these are also grown in temperate zones of the Himalayas, Japan and North America. Before the chile pepper was introduced in the 15th century, Asian cultures used Sichuan pepper and ginger to provide heat to many dishes. Today the well known heat of Sichuan cuisine comes from Tien Tsin, a red chile pepper grown in China. Many traditional Chinese recipes still call for Sichuan pepper. Sichuan peppercorns provide an unusual, sharp flavor that starts mildly warm with lemony, earthy undertones and then finishes with a flurry with an almost numbing effect on the tongue! Its elaborate and unusual flavor is often used to intensify the flavor of cheese, chicken, seafood and vegetables. Many cooks looking to add an exotic, captivating twist to a dish will use it as a substitute for black pepper. Ground sichuan peppercorns are also a key ingredient in Chinese Five Spice. Sichuan Peppercorns goes well in combination with black beans, chili, garlic, ginger, sesame seeds, soy sauce and star anise. We also carry a conventional Sichuan Peppercorn. If you're looking for organic peppercorns we also carry an Organic Black Peppercorn, Organic White Peppercorn, Organic Green Peppercorn and an Organic Black Smoked Peppercorn. |
