Our Organic Orange Peel is as flavorful as fresh orange zest and a lot less hassle. Our top quality dried orange zest is imported from Germany and is made from the flavorful outer peel and not the pith (the white part of the rind). The outer peel is minced and then dried which retains all of the essential oils. It is these oils that provide the potent citrus flavor and aroma.
The zest is the part of the orange that contains the greatest concentration of oil which is why it is so popular with bakers of all skill levels. Orange zest is sweeter and less expensive than the more common lemon zest. Organic Orange Zest is frequently called on in baking recipes such as banana bread, cheesecake, coffee cake, muffins and waffle batter. As with many spices that were traditionally used mainly in sweeter dishes we are now finding it appearing more often in savory recipes such as marinades, vegetables, chicken, dressings, seafood and rice. Helpful hint: To rehydrate dried orange zest add three parts water to one part dried orange peel and let stand for about 15 minutes. If you’re using this as a substitute in a recipe use these conversions: • 1/4 teaspoon of dried orange zest is equal to I teaspoon of fresh orange zest or orange peel • A large orange yields approximately 2 tablespoons of fresh zest • 1 tablespoon of orange zest can be used as a substitute for 1-1/2 teaspoons of orange extract And if you’re in a pinch you can use 1 teaspoon of lemon zest or lime zest in place of 1 teaspoon of orange zest. We also carry a top quality Organic Lemon Zest as well as a conventional (non organic) Orange Zest, Lemon Zest and Lime Zest. Some of our favorite recipes using orange zest are Spicy Coconut Shrimp with Couscous, Orange Poppy Seed Cookies and Spiced Hot Chocolate. |
