The proper pronunciation is “kuh-min” and it is native to the Nile valley in Egypt but it has long been cultivated in temperate climates around the world – the majority of cumin now comes from China, India and Turkey. Cumin Seed features an unmistakable flavor that is warm, spicy-sweet, somewhat bitter with earthy undertones.
When the new world was being settled cumin was introduced into Latin America by Spanish explorers where it rapidly became a central element in their cooking. Its usage in the U.S. was practically non-existent up until the exploding interest in Mexican and Latin American Recipes. However, for cooks in the Middle East, North African and the Far East, Ground Cumin has been a staple spice for many years. Cumin is a key ingredient in curry, garam masala blends, Tex-Mex chili , Moroccan Coucous and many Mexican bean, meat and rice dishes.
