Spiced Anise and Ginger Beef

As a one pot dish, this is a great recipe. Very easy to put together and have ready for a late day meal. We paired this flat iron steak with a Spicy Cabbage Slaw for a little bit of heat. Keep the calories and fat in check by using a very lean beef - the slow cooker will ensure the meat is tender by the time dinner is served. The aroma and flavor of the anise along with ginger give this dish a delightful taste.

Spiced Anise and Ginger Beef

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb lean sirloin or flat iron steak
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon peanut oil
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons crystallized ginger, minced
  • 1 tablespoon anise seed
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Directions:

  1. Add oil to a skillet and heat to medium high
  2. Add meat and sear on all sides
  3. Add vegetable broth and soy sauce to skillet and bring to a boil
  4. Remove from heat and transfer meat and sauce to slow cooker
  5. Add garlic, ginger, anise and sugar
  6. Cover and cook for 4 hours on high or 7 hours on low until meat is tender and cooked through
  7. Remove meat from slow cooker and keep warm.
  8. Strain sauce into a small saucepan to remove spices
  9. Bring sauce to a boil and cook until sauce is reduced by 1/2 and begins to thicken
