Another gourmet salt in our growing collection this Mayan Sea Salt is harvested off the coasts of El Salvador. This Pacific Ocean Sea Salt is captured in man-made ponds that are nourished by the rich volcanic soil. The end result is a delicate fresh flavor that is packed with minerals.
Archeologists have found evidence of sophisticate Mayan salt production dating back to 1,000 B.C.. Mayan Sea Salt has also been called White Gold and has been written about in numerous books discussing the intricate trade routes of the ancient Mayans. It is calculated that between 3 and 6 tons of sea salt where transported along these trades each and every day. It has been estimated that the daily canoe network was up to 3,000 canoes strong. This vast network included larger ocean size canoes which made their way to shipping transportation points (like a small seaport) where the salt was then moved to smaller canoes that would navigate the smaller inland waterways and rivers. The final mile(s) where carried by men to various cities inland. This cherished sea salt was harvested on each coast of Central America in what is now Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador. Talk about a great story to share with your dinner guests! Use our Mayan sea salt as a finishing salt. A good finishing salt has distinctive mineral, moisture, and crystal qualities that compliment your food with a burst of clean, mild salty flavor with each bite. Use on your eggs, pasta, potatoes, salads, veggies and also on your meats before grilling or roasting.
