Pronounced as "burr-bear". From the horn of Africa comes the delightful seasoning blend known as Berbere which is considered the culinary foundation of the Ethiopian cuisine. Also known as Berbere Spice, Berber Spice and Ethiopian Berbere.

As with many seasoning spice blends from around the world there are as many variations as there are regions, villages and families. This blend is often called the cupboard mix as it seems to have a little bit of everything tossed in – but the prominent spices in Berbere are always centered around the heat of pepper – cayenne, paprika, chili flakes and black pepper (in some variation).  Berbere does pack some spiciness from the chile peppers but it is more flavorful than crazy hot.

Hand blended from
cayenne pepper, smoked sweet paprika, red pepper flakes, fenugreek, clove, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, black pepper, cumin, sea salt, coriander, cinnamon and allspice.

As you can see below we've had excellent comments about our blend and we are sure that you will be pleased as well.

Some of our favorite recipes using Berbere are Doro Wat (Ethiopian Chicken),
Spicy Berbere Lentil Stew and for a delightful Berbere Sauce.

If you crave flavor from this region then you may also be interested in our hand blended HarissaPiri Piri Seasoning , Mitmita and our Ras El Hanout.

Spicy! In a nice way though, just get it and you will love it. I love it on steaks and any preparation of red meat. A truly new a different flavor profile. If your taste buds are bored they will thank you for trying Berbere out.

In agreement with the prior comment that it isn't a really authentic mix (like the piri piri also isn't), but, wow, this produces delicious dishes. John
