We find that there are many recipes calling for coarse salt these days. Coarse salt has a larger grain than most salts and generally is referring to sea salt or kosher salt. The rising popularity of coarse salt is that it is considered more flavorful than even regular sea salt. This doesn’t mean that it is saltier. The flavoring is much more pronounced as you taste the texture and flavor of these larger crystals as soon as they hit your tongue.
Our coarse sea salt is harvested in California and we were excited to pick this one up as it is the only commercially produced sea salt in the US. Now we absolutely love the exotic colors and flavors of our gourmet salts and felt that this was an excellent addition to our gourmet salt collection.
Our coarse sea salt does not include any caking agents and is ideal for topping pretzels, bread sticks, crackers or to flavor pasta, soup or stews. Where this salt really shines is when it’s used in a grinder which is also a fun way to add some freshly ground sea salt to your meals.
Coarse sea salt is typically not a good substitute for any baking recipe that calls for sea salt as the larger flakes cause flavor bursts in the baked dishes which distracts from the recipe.
