Allspice was first found by Spanish explorers shortly after Columbus had discovered the islands of the West Indies. Because it looked like the familiar black peppercorn in flavor, size and shape they called it pepper, which in Spanish translates to "pimiento".

Allspice which has a pleasing warm and fragrant smell is now also called "Jamaican Pepper". In 1621 the English began referring to this as Allspice as they thought that it was a combination of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.

One of the key ingredients in Caribbean cuisine, Allspice plays a leading role in jerk seasoning. In Jamaica wood from the allspice tree is used to smoke jerk chicken, fish and meat. While the primary use of allspice is in cooking it has a strong medicinal reputation as well. Ounce for ounce, the antioxidant content of allspice is higher than most berries, fruits, and vegetables.

Organic Allspice is a long-term investment for spice growers as allspice trees don't bear fruit until their 7th or 8th year and then don't begin to produce complete crops until after 15 years. Flowering from June through August the berry, which is approximately the size of a black currant, is harvested when still green.

Our Organic Allspice berries come from the mountain hillsides in Guatemala. These small family farmers are excited about planting new trees and improving their growing techniques. They have received funded training in organic management, quality and recordkeeping as well as receiving financial assistance with certification costs.

Allspice works well in combination with chili powder, cloves, coriander, garlic, ginger, dry mustard powder and pepper.

Allspice is best with eggplant, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes and most fruits.

We also carry a non organic Allspice powder and Allspice berry.

Some of our favorite recipes using allspice are Jerk Chicken Kabobs, Spicy Turkey Burgers, Sweet Potato Hash and Low Fat Oatmeal Pumpkin Cookies. For even more recipes using allspice.
