We've seen Alton Brown on TV talking up those little tins with the clear plastic tops for storing your spices but we've found that this just isn’t practical in most kitchens. After a year or so you end up with a bit of natural kitchen grease and various powders that accumulate in their rims. When we've washed these we've seen a bit of rust appear around the plastic top rim (both inside and out). So we tend to stick with the glass jars as the best way to store our spices. We also think that glass jars keep your spices fresher for a longer time.

Keep in mind how much spice or herb will fit in one of these jars. We consider these 3/4 cup jars as they will hold about 3/4 cup of product. If you had a heavier, denser product like salt you might be able to keep 10 ounces of product but if you have something light but with a high volume like dried oregano it will only hold about .6 of an ounce. Most ground spices (think cinnamon or ground cumin) will go for 3 to 3.5 ounces. So keep that in mind when ordering refills.

These are considered 6 oz jars. That means that they would hold 6 fluid ounces and the dimensions of the jar is 2-1/4" wide by 3-1/4"tall. We also carry a smaller 1/2 cup spice jar that holds approximately 1/2 a cup of product.

To ensure maximum flavor and aroma for your spices and herbs you want to keep them properly stored. Store your spices in cool and dark places away from heat. We do not use any anti-caking agents or preservatives in our blends so if you find some caking it is because they have picked up moisture from the air (this is ok and perfectly normal). We've found a spice cabinet away from the heat of the stove to work fine. Ideally keep your spices at a temperature of 65-70 degrees. For more on the shelf life of spices and proper spice storage.

You may want to experiment by keeping these in the refrigerator to see if that helps. Some spice aficionados also believe in keeping whole spices (seeds) and red spices like cayenne pepper in the refrigerator. We don't like to generally keep spices in the fridge or freezer as we think that the condensation from moisture causes more harm.
