Chinese Five Spice is a spice blends that tells a wonderful story - there are many who believe that this mixture was originally created to become the perfect spice blend as it incorporates the five base flavors of Chinese cooking - sweet, sour, bitter, salty and savory. Legend also has it that this is the Chinese way to incorporating the ying with the yang in cooking as the heat of a dish should be balanced by a corresponding cooling ingredient - Chinese Five Spice.

A very versatile spice seasoning blend it can be used in marinades for fish, chicken and seafood and with rice, vegetables and just about any stir fry. We have even heard of folks using it as a secret ingredient in their BBQ recipes!

Ground fresh and hand blended from ground star anise, Sichuan peppercorns, fennel seed, whole clove and cassia cinnamon.

Be wary of lesser quality Five Spice blends that use black pepper or anise seed, while less expensive to make the flavor is not nrealy as authentic or robust as this top quality Chinese Five Spice blend.

Helpful hint: This is a very potent spice blend and it is very easy to over power a dish so be sure to err on the side of caution and use less than you would of most spice blends. You can always add more.

Some of our favorite recipes using Chinese Five Spice are Chicken Stir Fry, Vegetarian Stir-Fry Burritos, Low Carb Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup, Chicken Teriyaki Kabobs, Cheese Ravioli and Veggie Stir Fry, Asian Chicken Sandwich and I even add it to my scrambled eggs - amazingly delicious!!

Wonderful spice blend! So far, I have made two of the accompanying Spices, Inc. recipes: the vegetarian stir-fry burritos(what I call Asian fajita), and the Chinese five spice pecans. Both recipes are WONDERFUL! :-)

This is a fantastic five spice blend. Far superior to anything I've been able to find in the stores. Highly recommend if you enjoy asian cooking!

Mark - are you sure the recipe called for tablespoons. Perhaps it was teaspoons?

The smell is divine. I don't know if I got a bad batch or something, but I followed a recipe fromt this website for chicken stirfry that called for 3 tablespoons in 3 lbs of chicken and it was simply inedible due to its bitterness. This was so disappointing as the aroma just causes you to close your eyes and enjoy but the taste was repuslive.
