We have been very fortunate since we launched SpicesInc.com and we know that we live in the greatest country in the world. But we also realize that our country is not perfect and every day children and seniors are not getting enough to eat and often go to bed hungry. How would you feel if this was happening to your kids, your sister or your grandma?
Our families taught us that we have an obligation to help out those less fortunate. And as a small family run business we believe that it is our responsibility to "Do Good".
So starting in July 2010 we began donating 1% of our sales* to Feeding America. Originally called America's Second Harvest, Feeding America is the United State's largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization. Feeding America's network consists of more than 200 Member food banks which provide assistance to more than 25 million people in need, including more than 9 million children and almost 3 million seniors in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each year, Feeding America distributes more than 2 billion pounds of food and grocery products to support feeding programs through an estimated 63,000 local charitable agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after-school programs, and Kids Cafes. For every $1 that Feeding America receives they provide $15 worth of groceries to a hungry person or family. Here are the sobering facts: For 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a daily occurrence. With millions of fellow Americans struggling to get enough food to eat, you probably don't realize it but you are in daily contact with people affected by hunger. Hunger doesn't target one single demographic --- no particular race or group. But it has the uncanny ability to find the most vulnerable. It happens to hard-working adults, children and seniors who each day just keep falling a little bit short and are forced to skip a meal, then another meal, sometimes for several days. We know we must help - it's the right thing to do. *1% of total product sales and NOT just 1% of profits.
